Inmate dies after being stabbed inside London prison
An inmate has died after being stabbed inside Wormwood Scrubs prison in West London. Police were called to the prison at 15:19 today to reports of an inmate suffering from stab injuries. Paramedics attempted to treat the man but despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made and a post-mortem is due to take place in due course.
Numerous reports since 2008 have stated how conditions at the Victorian jail have worsened over the years. Back in November 2008, a report from Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector said that heightened gang activity had been an area of concern in the jail. A 2014 report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons described the jail as “filthy.”
Violence has been rising in jails across England and Wales in the last few years. Back in 2016, 21-year-old Jamal Mahmoud was stabbed to death in HMP Pentonville Prison, North London. The murder was believed to have been instigated by a dispute between two gangs fighting over a lucrative smuggling route into the prison’s education wing. 3 men stood trial over the murder last year but were all cleared of murder and manslaughter charges. Another man was sentenced to 12 years for wounding with intent over the stabbing of Mohammed Ali who was stabbed in the same incident.
