Ex-boxer Anthony Small aka Abdul Haq charged with terror offence

Ex-boxer Anthony Small, a former light middleweight British and Commonwealth champion has been charged with encouraging an act of terrorism. In a statement released by the Metropolitan Police they said: “A 36-year-old man from south-east London is to appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 24 January charged with a terrorism offence.” The spokesman then went on to add “Anthony Small, 36, was charged with encouraging acts of terrorism under section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006 in connection with a video posted on social media in September 2016.”

Anthony Small converted to Islam aged 24 and has been a vocal advocate of the implementation of Sharia Law in Britain. Small has been involved in many controversies over the years. Back in 2010 he participated in a march protesting the British presence in Afghanistan with other well known Salafists and Jihadists with the group “Muslims against crusades.” The group is thought to be an off-shoot of Anjem Choudary’s banned al-Muhajiroun group. During the march placards were waved which said “British soldiers go to hell.” He has publically denounced fellow Muslim boxer Amir Khan as an “apostate.”

This is not the first time Anthony Small has been in contact with the law. In 2014, he was arrested after two other men were apprehended at Dover with false documents, and appeared in court at the Old Bailey on 15 June 2015 charged with planning to go to Syria to fight with Islamic State after spreading terrorist material online. He was subsequently found not guilty of this charge following a trial. Appearing under his Muslim name, Abdul Haq, Small was a participant in a BBC documentary called “Muslims like us.” Some of the participants of the show voiced concerns about Small’s apparently extremist views.
