“Iranian state spies” targeted in Germany
German special police have conducted raids on flats and offices that are being linked to Iranian state spies. According to Focus news, the move which was triggered by a German counter-intelligence operation is thought to involve Iranian spies who were monitoring Israeli or Jewish targets. No suspects have been apprehended and they are still at large.
Last month German officials summoned the Iranian ambassador to warn Tehran that spying on citizens in Germany was unacceptable after a Pakistani man was convicted of spying for Iran inside Germany. The raids took place in numerous locations across the country. Some of the locations where the police searched properties was Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Berlin.
Iran has a long held hatred of Israel, constantly calling for it to be wiped off the planet. During the protests which broke out in Iran several weeks ago, the Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed “Americans and Zionists” for the unrest in the country. This tactic of spying on Israeli or Jewish targets has long been employed by the Shia Islamic Republic. When asked about the claims made in Focus news that the targets being monitored by the Iranians were Jewish, Frauke Koehler, spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutors Office declined to comment.
